Cambodian cybercrime law seen as threat to dissent

The Cambodian authorities is pushing forward with a cybercrime regulation that specialists say might be wielded to additional curtail freedom of speech amid an ongoing crackdown on dissent.

The cybercrime draft is the third contentious web regulation that authorities have pursued prior to now 12 months as the federal government, led by new Prime Minister Hun Manet, seeks higher oversight of web actions, the US government-funded information service Voice of America (VoA) reported.

The most recent draft of the cybercrime regulation comprises 55 articles, in line with each English and Khmer language variations obtained by VoA. It lays out numerous offences punishable by fines and jail time, together with defamation, utilizing “insulting, derogatory or impolite language”, and sharing “false info” that would hurt Cambodia’s public order and “conventional tradition”.
