Feb. 27 (UPI) — In an effort to advertise the advantages of breastfeeding for infants, the Division of Well being and Human Providers introduced prize winners for its Lowering Disparities in Breastfeeding Innovation Problem on Tuesday.

“The nationwide competitors was created to determine and reward packages that enhance breastfeeding initiation and continuation charges and reduce disparities — amongst breastfeeding moms in the US,” HHS mentioned in a press launch Tuesday.

HHS mentioned the initiative is a part of the Biden administration’s Maternal Well being Blueprint, which was launched in 2022.

Final 12 months, the U.S. Labor Division launched an initiative to lift consciousness in regards to the rights of breastfeeding moms within the office beneath the PUMP for Nursing Moms Act.

“To make sure infants obtain the short- and long-term advantages of breastmilk, the U.S. Dietary Tips for Individuals recommends breastfeeding completely for the primary 6 months,” HHS mentioned.

In line with HHS, breastfeeding reduces the chance of diabetes, weight problems, bronchial asthma and sudden toddler dying syndrome.

“These organizations have developed progressive methods to coach, encourage, and assist breastfeeding, together with in communities of shade, so that oldsters can provide their infants the healthiest begin,” mentioned Deputy Assistant for Ladies’s Well being Dorothy Fink.

The award recipients will every obtain as much as $55,000.

The 5 recipients chosen are:

All Mothers Empowered In all places: A breastfeeding assist group primarily centered on African American moms.

Child Cafe USA: A Massachusetts nonprofit that gives neighborhood breastfeeding facilities in 32 states.

Neighborhood Well being Heart of Richmond Inc.: A Staten Island, N.Y., breastfeeding assist program that serves the immigrant and non-English-speaking inhabitants.

District of Columbia Breastfeeding Coalition: A Washington, D.C., nonprofit that seeks to extend breastfeeding charges within the African American neighborhood.

Mississippi Champs Program: A Boston Medical Heart-based initiative that goals to extend breastfeeding charges.
