MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stated on Thursday that it has detected an elevated sulfur dioxide emission from the Taal Volcano.
“A complete of 14,558 tonnes/day of volcanic sulfur dioxide or SO2 fuel emission from the Taal Most important Crater was measured at present, 29 February 2024,” Phivolcs stated in its advisory.
The company stated that the quantity is the second-highest recorded flux for 2024.
On common, the Taal Volcano emitted 9,450 tonnes per day of sulfur for February, the Phivolcs stated.

No volcanic smog or vog was noticed, and three volcanic earthquakes have been recorded for the month of February, it added.
At present, Alert Stage 1 is raised on the volcano, which signifies that it’s in a “low stage of volcanic unrest.” Underneath the current stage, minor eruptions, earthquakes, and ashfalls could happen.

Phivolcs additionally informed native authorities to take obligatory precautions towards any potential results of sulfur dioxide of their communities.
“Native authorities models are suggested to repeatedly monitor and assess volcanic SO2 publicity of, and potential impacts on, their communities and undertake acceptable response measures to mitigate these hazards,” it stated.
“DOST-PHIVOLCS is intently monitoring Taal Volcano’s exercise and any new important growth can be instantly communicated to all stakeholders,” it added.
